A busy week anchored by an important Fed rate decision is also the week directly before the Christmas holiday that ravages market participation and activity. So are we destined for a seasonally-familiar quiet lead-in to the end of the year or an explosive, last swell in volatility? A good gauge of how much activity we can see through the period can be drawn from short-term measures of implied (or expected) volatility. Whether the Fed Tapers or not, risk trends collapse or remain buoyant; this gauge can tell us the minimum the market is expected to move regardless of the outcome.
