Allstate Third Quarter Earnings Preview

On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, Allstate (NYSE:ALL) will release its third quarter earnings. In the past month, expectations have risen for the upcoming results. The consensus analyst estimate has risen from 82 cents per share to the current projection of earnings of $1.12 per share.

What to Expect: The consensus estimate for Allstate's earnings is $1.12 per share, up 600% from a year ago when the company reported earnings of 16 cents per share.

Over the past three months, this has increased from 76 cents. For the fiscal year, analysts are projecting earnings of $4.51 per share.

Revenue for the quarter is expected to be $6.95 billion, short of last year's reported figure of $8.24 billion by 15.7%. Revenue for the fiscal year is expected to come in at $26.79 billion.



Company Performance: Revenue for Allstate has been on the rise for four consecutive quarters. It rose 2.4% in the second quarter, 3.3% in the first quarter, 1.8% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year and 4.2% in the third quarter of the last fiscal year.

ALL has a P/E ratio of 10.0, in line with the industry average. Perhaps one of the most widely-used stock analysis tools is the price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E. Over the past quarter, the stock price has increased from $34.76 on July 30, 2012 to $40.51. Allstate's best recent streak was when its price gained $2.87 per share between August 16, 2012 and October 12, 2012.





The Competition: Allstate provides insurance on personal property as well as offering casualty insurance, life insurance, retirement, and investment products. Most analysts (12 of 24) give Allstate a hold rating. In the last three months, the number of buy ratings has increased slightly.

The company's closest competitor in the insurance (prop. and casualty) industry is Travelers (TRV). Analysts are more optimistic about Allstate than about Travelers. Only 11 out of 22 analysts rate the latter a buy compared to 12 of 24 for the former.
