Exxon Mobil's Third Quarter Earnings Report

Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) announced its results for the third quarter on November 1, 2012. ExxonMobil Corporation produces and sells crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products.

The Numbers: Exxon Mobil beat expectations with its latest EPS and revenue figures. The company reported $2.09 per share versus the $1.96 per share estimate and revenues of $115.71 billion versus the $115.08 billion estimate. Revenue fell 7.7% from the same period last year while EPS is down 1.9%. Exxon Mobil's net income for the third quarter fell 7.4% from last year's figures to $9.57 billion.



A Look Back: Net income has increased 14.5% year-over-year on average across the last five quarters. The biggest gain came in the second, when income climbed 49% from the year-earlier quarter.



Looking Ahead: Analysts have a more positive outlook about the company's results for next quarter. The average estimate for fourth quarter is $2.01 per share, an increase from $1.90 60 days ago. When analyst increase earnings estimates investors can assume business has been stronger than first thought and is an encouraging sign for investors. The average estimate for the fiscal year has seen a bump from $7.51 per share 60 days ago to $7.72.
