Earnings play an important role in measuring the appropriate valuation for a stock. Investors should be cautious if the company's stock price is high but it consistently has low earnings. SEE: Earnings: Quality Means Everything

The Numbers: HCP posted revenues above analyst predictions, though the company's EPS came up short of expectations. The company reported 45 cents per share versus the 69 cents per share estimate and revenues of $475.3 million versus the $462.7 million estimate. EPS rose 9.8% while revenue climbed 7.7% from the same period last year. Net income for the third quarter was $195.6 million. According to the reported number, this is up 17.6% from last year's figures.

Looking Ahead: Analysts appear increasingly negative about the company's results for the next quarter. The average estimate for the fourth quarter has moved down from 71 cents a share to 70 cents over the last seven days. Decreasing earnings estimates is generally a negative sign as it suggests analyst believe future earnings to be weaker than previously anticipated. The average estimate for the fiscal year is now $2.76 per share, down from $2.78 60 days ago.
