Definition of 'Ramani Ayer'

A former president and CEO of Hartford Financial Services. Ayer was born in 1947 in India and immigrated to the United States in 1969 to attend Drexel University, where he earned a master's degree and Ph.D. in chemical engineering. He joined The Hartford in 1973, the same year he obtained his Ph.D, and worked there for his entire career, becoming president and CEO in 1997 and retiring in 2009.

Hartford Financial Services was founded in 1810. During Ayer's tenure, the company purchased CNA's group life and disability and medical and accident business, began selling variable and fixed annuities in Japan and became a Fortune 100 company.

The company sells personal insurance products, including auto, homeowners, life, flood and disability and offers personal investment vehicles such as mutual funds, annuities, college savings plans and individual retirement plans. It also offers business products ranging from employee benefits to general liability insurance to errors and omissions insurance.
