The billionaire founders of Amazon and Tesla are building private rocketships. Through their respective companies, Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Tesla's Elon Musk have each promised to send civilians into space in the near future. Musk claimed his company SpaceX will send two paying customers on a mission around the moon by the end of 2018.

Many investors are cheering on these "space entrepreneurs'" bold new venture. After all, Bezos and Tesla have attained godlike status with shareholders. Under Bezos' watch, Amazon's stock has soared soared more than 9,900% since 2001. And under Musk, Tesla's stock has returned over 1,722% since 2010.

With results like that, no venture seems too ambitious. But market psychology expert Peter Atwater sees it differently.
