Topel & DiStasi Wealth Management
Prior to co-founding Topel & DiStasi Wealth Management, Gavin DiStasi was an Associate Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. where he began his career in the financial services industry in 1999 as a paraplanner.
Gavin’s journey to financial services was not a typical one. He was trained as a classical musician at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music before accepting an invitation to tour with the avant-garde jazz quartet, Marshall Arts, in 1992. He spent the next eight years touring the world and performing as a professional musician in venues ranging from the Istanbul Open Air Theater to Madison Square Garden with such artists as The Black Crowes, Phil Lesh and The Charles Mingus Big Band.
A chance offer from Gavin's childhood friend, Jarrett Topel, revived a lifelong fascination with finance and led him to the financial services industry in 1999 where he began his second career at what was then American Express Financial Advisors. In 2003 he and Jarrett branched out to run their own franchise of American Express Financial Advisors, which was later spun off and re-branded as Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. Since then, he has continued to expand his expertise, earning the CES™ (board certification in estate planning) designation from the Institute of Business & Finance while maintaining client relationship duties as well as directing business development and investment management strategies at the firm.
Gavin holds CA Insurance and FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 securities licenses. Over the years he has taught numerous financial planning, investment and risk management courses at a variety of community-based organizations throughout the Bay Area.
Currently, Gavin lives with his wife Tracy and children Nicolas and Ava in the Elmwood neighborhood of Berkeley where he was born and raised.

The answer is yes, you can contribute to both a Traditional 401(k) and a Roth 401(k), assuming your plan offers both. The limit is $18,000 per year total (with an additional $6,000 allowed per year if you are over age 50). The decision of how much to commit to each is a personal one, and really comes down to the timing of paying taxes. With the Traditional 401(k), the funds are contributed to the plan pre-tax, and you are taxed when they are withdrawn (presumably in retirement). With the Roth 401(k), the funds are are contributed to the plan after-tax, and are tax-free when they are withdrawn.
Proceeds from a sale of stock would not be subject to taxes as long as the proceeds are left in the IRA. They will be taxed once you remove them from the IRA account. Generally, funds removed from an IRA account are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, as long as you are over age 59 1/2. If you remove them before age 59 1/2, you will pay ordinary income tax, plus a penalty for early withdrawal, except in some specific hardship cases.
