Director of Wealth Management
Matt Abels serves as the Director of Wealth Management at Foster Group. In this role, Matt is tasked with leading our planning committee which guides the best practices of the firm and ensures our advisors have all the tools and resources they need to effectively serve our clients. Matt also maintains responsibilities as a Lead Advisor, helping clients navigate the complexities of their financial situation.
Prior to joining Foster Group in 2013, Matt spent five years as a financial planner for Abels Financial Services in West Des Moines, and six years at the Principal Financial Group, where he divided his time between Retirement and Investor Services and Group Underwriting. Matt graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in finance and currently holds his Certified Financial Planner™ designation.
One of Matt's favorite quotes is from Benjamin Franklin: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” He has always felt the more education and information you have, the better decisions you can make. He finds this especially true not only in helping people understand their financial situations, but in day-to-day life, as well.
Matt and his wife, Annie, were married in 2006 and we were blessed with their daughters, Jessa, in 2010, and Ada, in 2014. While he is now outnumbered by women in his house and his man cave is slightly less manly than he envisioned, he's been surprised by how much fun he has playing kitchen and building sand castles. When Matt is not playing kitchen, he really enjoys playing or watching sports. As an avid sports fan, one of his favorite books is, “Quiet Strength” written by former NFL coach Tony Dungy. It chronicles his playing and coaching career and Matt found that it gave him great perspective on the importance of being a good husband and father while balancing the demands of your career.
