Can an EE bond be cashed before it has reached it's maturity date?
EE Bonds start accruing interest from the first day of the month that you purchase them. EE Bonds can accrue interest for up to 30 years. You can cash in your EE Bonds early. You only are subject to a penalty if you cash in your bond within the first five years. You may cash in an EE Bond after 12 months. If you cash in an EE Bond less than five years after it was issued, you are not eligible to receive the last three months of interest. For example, if you cash in an EE Bond after 24 months, you will only receive the first 21 months of interest.
Yes, you are permitted to cash in a EE savings bond before maturity. However, there is a 3-month interest penalty if you cash an EE or I bond within the first five years from its issue date.
If the EE bond is held in a TreasuryDirect account, there are no fees for redeeming the bond.
Hope that this helps.
