Here are some of the celebs whose names appear in the searchable Offshore Leaks database that the International Consortium for Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released on May 9. The database includes information from the Panama Papers as well as the ICIJ findings from a separate 2013 investigation. Disclaimers: Please note that Investopedia has not independently investigated the nature of these individuals' involvement with any of the entities mentioned in the Offshore Leaks database; all we can confirm is that the names appear in the database. In some cases, the identities have been verified by other sources. Please also note that having an offshore account is in itself not unlawful.
Methodology: Many of these names were taken from the hard Excel-jockeying work of Redditor amaklp, which Investopedia individually verified against the ICIJ database. The original poster explains in this Reddit post how to use the spreadsheet, if you want to delve into it yourself.
Gryffindor, minus two points. The Brit actress best known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise has been named in the papers. She has gone on the record as admitting this is she, and that she used offshore funds for "privacy" reasons and not for the purposes of concealment.
Well, don't act so surprised, everyone. It should have been obvious that Ron Weasley was not going to be a good provider. On the other hand, Watson is so far the only person on this list who has admitted ties to the Panama Papers. So Gryffindor's two points are restored. And as this Redditor notes, the company created on Watson's behalf is...
Alan Moore (named in the Panama Papers)
As with many of these names, Alan Moore seems common enough that he might not be who we think it is ... but we are really hoping it is Alan Moore, the graphic novelist who created V for Vendetta.
Emilio Estevez (named in the Panama Papers)
How the Mighty Duck has fallen (assuming this is that Brat Pack actor). Or risen, depending on how you look at it. Terribly important PS: Estevez' brother Charlie Sheen and father Martin Sheen are not named in the database.
Gong Li (named in the Panama Papers)
One of China's greatest-ever film actresses (Farewell My Concubine, etc) and Zhang Yimou muse (or someone sharing her name) has shares in the Vital Aviation Technology Investment Company Ltd:
Aishwarya Rai (named in 2013 Offshore Leaks investigation database)
The Bollywood starlet whom the late film critic Roger Ebert once dubbed "not only the first, but also the second most beautiful woman in the world" has been named in the Offshore Leaks database. And so has her famous father-in-law...
Amitabh Bachchan (named in 2013 Offshore Leaks investigation database)
Bollywood's greatest living male star and father-in-law to Rai has denied knowing about the companies to which he has been linked, and issued a statement to the media claiming, "it is possible my name has been misused." (Above: a clip of one of my favorite Bachchan performances of all time)
Lucy Liu (named in 2013 Offshore Leaks investigation database)
We have no way of verifying whether this is the Charlie's Angels actress or someone else with the same name.
Anatoly Karpov (named in 2013 Offshore Leaks investigation database)
We have no way of verifying whether this is the former chess World Champion who lost that title to Garry Kasparov in 1985.
Michael Chang (named in 2013 Offshore Leaks investigation database)
This might or might not refer to the youngest tennis player ever to win a Grand Slam event (French Open, 1989).
