  • May only cover one case of foreign body ingestion

Overview

AKC Pet Insurance is the only pet insurance company in Texas we reviewed that offers coverage for both curable and chronic pre-existing conditions after one year. Plus, there are no upper age limits, so older pets with chronic diseases can get coverage.

AKC was also our top pick for the best emergency pet insurance

Every plan also includes alternative therapies, hydrotherapy and physical therapy, and, in some states, coverage for behavioral conditions. However, there’s no coverage for dental disease under the policy unless you buy an upgraded add-on. AKC won’t cover certain occurrences more than once, such as foreign body ingestion. Also, some coverages that other insurers include in their accident and illness plans cost extra for AKC plans, like congenital conditions and exam fees.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for comprehensive coverage at an affordable price in Texas, Figo, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, and Pets Best are all excellent options. Pets Best pays your vet directly so you don’t have to wait for a reimbursement, but it has a longer waiting period for cured pre-existing condition coverage.

If you have a pet with a chronic condition, AKC Pet Insurance may be your best bet, but keep in mind the company doesn’t cover dental illnesses. And if you rescued your pet from one of Companion Protect’s partner shelters, the company’s insurance is a good option for no waiting period and fast claims. Most claims are processed quickly with Prudent Pet Insurance as well. If you have a feathered or scaled friend, or another exotic species, Nationwide will likely serve you best, but you’ll need to call for pricing information.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do All Vets Take Pet Insurance in Texas?

Most pet insurance companies reimburse you after you’ve paid your veterinarian and don’t have specific vet networks you have to use, so you can use any licensed vet in Texas. However, if you want your pet insurance company to pay your vet directly, you’ll need to find a vet willing to sign a release form allowing payment to come directly from your insurance company.

  • Does Pet Insurance Cover Surgery?

As long as your vet deems the surgery medically necessary to treat a covered condition or accident, your pet insurance company will likely reimburse you for its share of the cost. Elective surgeries or operations to treat pre-existing conditions likely won’t be covered. Every pet insurance policy is different, so you check with your plan provider to ensure the surgery is covered.

  • What Is the Most Common Deductible for Pet Insurance?

Most pet owners choose a $250 deductible, according to Nationwide. If you choose a higher deductible, you may enjoy a lower pet insurance premium, but you’ll be required to pay more out-of-pocket each year for covered claims—choose a deductible that you can comfortably afford.

  • Does Pet Insurance Cover Birds and Other Exotic Animals?

While most pet insurance companies only cover cats and dogs, pet insurance is available for some types of birds and other exotic animals through Nationwide and Pet Assure.

  • What Does Pet Insurance Not Cover?

Every pet insurance policy is different, but there are some common exclusions. Most pet insurance companies do not cover elective procedures, experimental treatments, preventable diseases, incurable pre-existing conditions (sometimes including bilateral conditions that occurred on the other side before coverage began), and things not considered an accident or illness. There are exceptions, however. For example, AKC Pet Insurance offers pre-existing condition coverage and an add-on for breeding.

Methodology

To find the best pet insurance companies in Texas, we evaluated 18 pet health insurance companies based on the following criteria:

  • Coverage (17%): We looked at whether policies included coverage for exams, medications, behavioral problems, prescription diets and supplements, alternative therapies and rehabilitation, genetic conditions, and dental accidents and illnesses.
  • Cost-to-value (15%): We evaluated the highest and lowest premiums offered in Texas relative to the associated coverage to develop a quote score for each company.
  • Claims processing (12%): We compared claim turnaround times and whether direct vet pay was offered. We also evaluated whether medical record reviews and claim pre-approvals were offered.
  • Deductibles, reimbursement, and limits (9%): We looked into options provided for deductibles, reimbursement percentages, and both annual and lifetime caps on benefits.
  • Waiting periods (8%): We assessed waiting periods for accidents and illnesses as well as extended waiting periods for specific conditions.
  • Discount opportunities (7%): We considered whether companies provided additional savings opportunities, such as a diminishing deductible, a multi-pet discount, or a military discount.
  • Pre-existing conditions coverage (6%): We compared companies based on whether they covered cured and chronic pre-existing conditions and the waiting periods associated with coverage for these conditions. We also considered whether policies contained a bilateral clause.
  • Age limits (5%): We considered minimum and maximum age limits for pet enrollment.
  • Quote process (4%): We looked at how easy it was to get a quote with each company, along with the availability of sample policies online.
  • Customer service (4%): We looked at options for connecting with the customer service team and whether self-service options were available through a mobile app.
  • 24/7 vet line (3%): We assessed whether each company offered 24/7 support from a veterinary professional.
  • Negative claims impact (3%): Companies that ding policyholders with higher rates or reduced coverage for filing claims received scrutiny.
  • Company metrics (3%): We considered the length of time in business for each company.
  • Fees (3%): Some companies charge enrollment or maintenance fees, which we considered in addition to the quote score.
  • Birds/exotics coverage (1%): Though few companies provide coverage for exotic pets, we considered this feature when evaluating pet insurance providers.
