Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Investopedia’s Rating

Pros Explained

  • Up to 90% reimbursement: It’s possible to receive reimbursement for up to 90% of covered vet bills for a variety of situations, including hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, cancer, and emergencies.
  • Quick and easy claims process: Most claims can be submitted online and processed in just two days.
  • No claim limits: There are no annual or lifetime caps on claim payouts through the Healthy Paws plan.

Cons Explained

  • Single policy offered: Healthy Paws only offers one accident and illness policy and doesn’t have any riders or add-ons, like wellness/preventative care.
  • No discounts: Healthy Paws doesn’t offer any of the discounts common to the pet insurance industry, like multi-pet, breeder, and military discounts.
  • Not ideal for older pets: While some pet insurers reduce benefits for senior pets, Healthy Paws has various restrictions for animals older than six and won’t take on new pets 14 and older.

Those looking for solid accident and illness coverage for their pet will appreciate that Healthy Paws offers a fairly comprehensive plan to help with surprise expenses. There are no claim limits, so you don’t have to worry if your furry friend is more accident-prone than usual.

Unlike many other insurers, there is only one pet insurance plan available through Healthy Paws. See our picks for the best pet insurance companies for a wider selection of policies.

Company Overview

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance LLC has been providing accident and illness coverage for cats and dogs since 2009 (other pets are not eligible). That same year it also launched the Healthy Paws Foundation, which has helped hundreds of pet rescues and animal shelters care for sick homeless pets.

To make it easier to manage your pet insurance, Healthy Paws created the first pet insurance iPhone app (according to Healthy Paws) and eliminated paper claim forms so you can manage your policy entirely online. Healthy Paws pet insurance plans are underwritten by Chubb, the world's largest publicly traded property and casualty insurer.

Available Plans

The Healthy Paws pet insurance plan can help cover the costs that come with illnesses and unexpected accidents—like Fido swallowing your earbuds. This plan provides reimbursement for up to 90% of vet bills for covered treatments, including the situations below.

Covered Treatment Illness/Injury Plan

Emergency/specialty care  ✓

Available Riders/Add-Ons

Healthy Paws offers a single accident/illness plan and does not have any riders or add-ons that you can purchase to extend your coverage.

Waiting Periods

Once you sign up for a Healthy Paws insurance plan, your policy will become effective at 12:01 a.m. the day following your enrollment date. There is a fifteen-day waiting period for accident and illness coverage following that, and a 12-month waiting period for illnesses related to hip dysplasia.

If your pet falls ill or experiences an injury during the waiting period, you won’t receive coverage because this will be considered a pre-existing condition. The point of these waiting periods is to dissuade people from signing up for a policy only after they realize their pet is already sick or injured.

Cancellation Policy

Only the policyholder (known as the Pet Parent) can cancel the policy. You can submit a cancellation request by email, phone, fax, or mail.

To submit a cancellation request by email, you can send a message to that includes the following information:

  • Your name
  • Pet’s name
  • Pet policy number
  • Cancellation effective date
  • Reason for cancellation

If you submit a cancellation request within the first 30 days of your pet's policy and have yet to file a claim, you can receive a full refund (the exception being if you live in New York or South Carolina).

Plan Exclusions

The following events and issues aren’t included in Healthy Paws pet insurance coverage:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Examination fees
  • Preventive healthcare such as vaccinations, titer tests, flea control, heartworm medication, deworming, nail trimming, and grooming
  • Parasite control (including but not limited to internal and external parasites)
  • Dental health care (dental injuries caused by accidents are covered)
  • Spaying and neutering
  • Anal gland expression
  • Bilateral cruciate ligament conditions
  • Hip dysplasia (only for newly added dogs over age six)

Any costs, fees, or expenses related to the following are not covered:

  • Elective procedures
  • Boarding
  • Behavioral modification, training, therapy, or related medications

Pre-Existing Conditions

As noted above, pre-existing conditions aren’t covered. Healthy Paws considers any condition to be pre-existing if it showed signs or symptoms before your pet’s coverage started.

Some pet insurers will consider a pre-existing condition to be “cured” if it has shown no signs or symptoms for a specific period of time, and will provide coverage for that condition. Healthy Paws has no such policy about cured pre-existing conditions.

Plan Pricing

The breed, age, sex, and type of pet you have (dog or cat) will be taken into account when determining your plan price. Your annual deductible options are $100, $250, and $500; you can choose a reimbursement rate of 70%, 80%, or 90%. There are no annual or lifetime coverage limits, which is fairly rare.

You can check your specific rates and get more information by obtaining a quote online.

The claims process is pretty straightforward with Healthy Paws. You can file a claim through an online form or the mobile app, or you can email a claim form along with an itemized invoice to

Most claims are processed within two days; once your claim is processed, reimbursement is usually sent within 24 hours. You can receive reimbursement by mailed check or direct deposit.

Third-Party Ratings

The Chubb Group, which underwrites Healthy Paws’ insurance, has a Financial Strength rating of A++ (Superior) from AM Best, along with an A++ for Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating. These are the highest possible ratings, and they indicate that the Chubb Group is financially strong and stable, with an appropriate risk management strategy.

Feedback from Healthy Paws customers, collected by Investopedia, was mostly positive; it included:

  • “Great customer service”
  • “Fair price, good coverage, wanted protection.”
  • “Sometimes, the app is hard to use because it freezes often.”

Alternative Choices

Before you pay for a pet insurance policy, you’ll want to research a few different insurance providers to make sure that you’re getting the best possible coverage for your budget. Not sure where to start? Here are a few helpful questions to ask while shopping around.

  • What is the coverage limit?
  • What is the monthly premium?
  • What is the deductible?
  • Is there a minimum or maximum cutoff age?
  • What are the coverage exclusions?
  • Is there a wellness policy or rider?
  • Can I get coverage for dental cleanings or oral surgery?

Final Verdict

If you’re only looking for basic accident and illness pet insurance, you may find that Healthy Paws can provide you with an affordable option. It’s a simple, take-it-or-leave-it kind of plan, with no options to adjust your coverage. If you expect to run into the covered situations it could be a good fit, but you’ll need to budget for routine preventative care separately.
