If you’ve ever seen the TLC reality series Extreme Couponing, you know many American shoppers have become absolutely obsessed with coupons. In 2013 alone, U.S. consumers redeemed a whopping 2.8 billion packaged goods coupons, according to a NCH Marketing Services report.

Of course, some folks have time to comb through 20 different newspapers and circulars, clip thousands of squares of paper until their fingers blister, carefully alphabetize said squares in an organizer – and then argue with cashiers over expiration dates and whether coupons are “stackable” (meaning you can combine several coupons for one item to get even bigger savings on your purchase).
