Tax breaks aren’t just for big companies. Many can be applied to an individual’s return, and you don’t need to be a financial genius to claim them. Here are six credits or deductions that could be yours for the taking. 1. Charitable donations Most cash and non-cash donations to charities can be claimed as itemized deductions on individual tax returns. You’ll need a receipt that states the value of the goods or services you contributed. 2. Childcare credit If you pay for childcare while you work, you may be eligible for a tax credit of several thousand dollars for two or more children. You’ll need clear records, and don’t pay in cash – you need proof of payment. 3. Energy-efficient home improvements Consumers can claim a hefty percentage of the cost for energy-efficient home improvements. These might be energy-efficient windows and doors, heating and cooling equipment or appliances. 4. Residential renewable energy tax credits Certain home additions can fetch green tax credits of up to a third of their cost. They include solar energy systems, small wind systems, geothermal heat pumps, residential fuel cells and micro-turbine systems. 5. Automobile tax credits A hybrid gas-electric or alternative fuel car can result in a tax credit. Amounts vary by vehicle. 6. Relocating for work To recover some moving expenses, the distance from your new job site to your old home must be at least 50 miles further than your old commute. And right after you move, you must be employed for at least 39 weeks out of the next 12 months.
